Spam and Mail Blocking

Why am I getting so many spam mails and how can I stop them1

There are several ways spammers can get your E-mail address. Trolling through web sites looking for E-mail addresses, Trolling through newsgroups, Purchasing or otherwise obtaining lists from commercial and other sources. Some web browsers will provide your E-mail address to web sites that you visit. In addition, HTML (web) based E-mail messages can contain "web bugs" that let the sender know when you read their E-mail. Note: Road Runner does NOT disclose your E-mail addresses to any third party.

The most efficient and safe way to handle SPAM is to delete it. Never reply to it, click on any links, or follow instructions about removing yourself from a list. Doing so informs the SPAMMER that they've found a live mail box and you may find yourself getting more E-mail than before.

Never purchase something advertised in unsolicited E-mail. This just encourages the spammers. If a product familiar to you is advertised, complain to the manufacturing company about their E-mail practices.

Maintain a spam E-mail account. Web-based E-mail accounts are free and easy to set up. Get one that is intended specifically for spam. Don't use it for personal and work communications, but give it out when signing up for mailing lists, posting to newsgroups, or shopping online.

Don't give out your real E-mail address. If you don't have a spam E-mail account, leave the space for your E-mail address blank when filling out online registration forms. If the site requires you to enter an E-mail address, you can fill in a phony one.

Use your E-mail client's filtering functionality to filter unwanted messages. You can filter messages with Outlook Express. From the main menu select Tools -> Message Rules -> Mail. If your are using Outlook from the main menu, select Tools -> Rules Wizard or you can purchase spam filtering software. For help on filtering out unwanted spam visit Preventing Unwanted Spam*.

How do I report Spam

To report spam, it is important that you copy the E-mail in question (or one example E-mail) with full headers displayed and send to spamblock@security.rr.com. Paste the copy of the offending mail into the body of your E-mail. Do not send attachments. If the full E-mail headers are not included, we will be unable to discern where the E-mail originated, and thus will be unable to assist you with the matter.

Click here for information on how to display full headers in your E-mail client. For more information on displaying full E-mail headers visit spamcop.net*

Some good places to get additional information on how to send spam complaints can be found at spamcop.net*, spam.abuse.net* and SamSpade.org*.

What is a mail block
Road Runner, in response to the ongoing (and increasing) amount of incoming spam complaints from our customers and our divisions, has recently implemented additional resources to stem the tide of incoming spam. Road Runner blocks E-mail coming from IP addresses which abuse Internet resources by sending massive quantities of unsolicited commercial or bulk E-mail (commonly known as "spam"). This helps us to keep a significant amount of unwanted commercial e-mail from clogging our system, and assists us in solving a problem that is negatively impacting our customers. If someone sends an e-mail message and the sender's IP address or SMTP (mail) server is on one of these lists, then the incoming e-mail is blocked. The introduction of this tool may result in the inadvertent blocking of some e-mail that is not traditional spam. If an incoming E-mail is denied, a system message is sent back to the sender advising them that they should visit our local web page to receive information on why the message was refused. For more information on mail blocks visit security.rr.com.
